EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Assists in planning and implementing suitable learning experiences for toddler age children, 18 – 36 months.
Carry out “curriculum” for child development in the context of the classroom experiences.
Helps toddlers develop positive relationships with peers and adults.
Facilitate group experiences and other family group activities.
Conduct screenings, observations and ongoing assessment of young children’s development.
Supervises and/or participates in indoor and outdoor activities with toddlers.
Promote parental involvement in curriculum planning, program governance, and the overall Early Head Start program.
Assists in setting up, monitoring and cleaning up of the classroom.
Introduces new foods and reinforces appropriate program nutrition guidelines.
Maintains awareness of and care for daily toddler health needs and refers action as necessary.
Operates equipment and machines necessary to program operation.
Completes position related clerical tasks, e.g. attendance reports, meal counts, etc.
Functions as an appropriate, positive role model.
To implement Early Head Start Performance Standards and child development “Best Practices”.
Provide an environment that supports consistent, stable, and supportive relationships with toddlers and their families. Including safety and effective methods of communication.
Work together with families through parent conferences to identify each child’s needs, emotionally, socially, cognitively and physically to assist in promoting parenting skills.
Maintain confidentiality of family records and information.
Participate fully in staff meetings, parent meetings and training experiences.
May assist children, teachers, parents and/or community members with communication situations resulting from a limited knowledge of English or Spanish.
Conduct home visits with families as required.
Substitute as classroom teacher when necessary.
Assists with housekeeping duties, e.g., laundry, disinfecting toys etc.
Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of & Ability:
Child growth and development principles
Policies and objectives of assigned program
Record–keeping techniques
Oral and written communication skills
Interpersonal skills including tact, patience and courtesy
Operation of various instructional and program equipment

Carry out oral and written directions
Sustain cooperative relationships with those contacted in course of work
Bilingual and/or bi-literate ability is desirable
Capacities to problem solve, handle crisis situations, and work with families and children of various cultures from low-income backgrounds.
Approach to working with families that is empathic, nonjudgmental, respectful and professional
Flexibility with respect to time and days able to work as well as to work tasks
Physical Demands: The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions:
Hearing and speaking to exchange information
Seeing to monitor students and read a variety of materials
Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to assist students
Standing for extended periods of time
Dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate specialized apparatus (e.g. latches, levers and switches on certain devises like gates, cribs and playground equipment) and standard office and classroom equipment
Frequent standing, walking and sitting
Persons performing service in this position classification will exert 10 to 20 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:
Graduation from high school required
Associate degree in Early Childhood Education or related field required
One year experience in an early childhood setting preferred
Three to six units of infant/toddler/development required based on Permit held.
Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education or related field preferred
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIRMENTS:
Child Development Associate Teacher Permit issued by CTC required.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Valid California driver’s license
DOJ Fingerprint clearance
TB clearance, proof of immunization against influenza, pertussis, and measles
